From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.

“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release

But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.

But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.

“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
