Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
